Our Cape buffalo herd
We breed our own Cape buffalo in Limpopo. That single fact shapes every hunt on the property. The herd carries a property average of around 45" across the boss, none under 42", and our top sire green-scores in the high 50s — genetics you cannot buy in for a season. Because the animals are managed year-round on our own ground, every Cape buffalo hunt here is free-range dangerous-game hunting on a herd we know intimately, not a bought-in bull dropped in for the week. Rifle & calibre
South African law and sound ethics set the .375 H&H as the minimum for Cape buffalo. It's a proven all-rounder and has accounted for more buffalo than any other cartridge. Shot placement
On a broadside bull, put the first shot high-shoulder into the heart-lung triangle — straight up the front leg, one-third of the way into the body — to break the shoulder and stop the buffalo on his tracks. On a frontal presentation, aim for the centre of the chest at the base of the neck. Whatever the first shot, be ready with a solid on the follow-up. The Limpopo dry-season winter — roughly May through September — is the prime window for Cape buffalo. The grass drops, the bush opens, and buffalo concentrate on the pans and river lines, which makes tracking and glassing far easier. What a Marula buffalo hunt is really like
The day starts before the light. With our trackers you cut for fresh sign at first light and follow — a herd grazing toward water, or a lone dagga boy holed up in the thick stuff. Hours of patient, quiet stalking follow, the wind dictating every move. When the moment comes it is close, often inside thirty or forty yards, and it asks for a steady nerve and a well-placed shot. Buffalo are immensely tough; we follow up every animal with the care and respect it deserves. Our Cape buffalo season on the Marula concession runs May through September — the cool, dry Limpopo winter. The grass drops, the bush thins, and buffalo concentrate on the pans and river lines, which makes both tracking and glassing far easier. Early season (May) is green-tinged and mild; mid-winter (June to August) brings the crispest mornings and the best tracking conditions of the year; September warms up and pushes the herds harder onto water.
