The Lodge

A hunting lodge in Steenbokpan, Limpopo

Marula Game is a family-owned hunting and eco-tourism reserve in the Limpopo Bushveld, twenty kilometres south of the Botswana border near Steenbokpan. The land — 24,700 acres of mopane, marula and acacia — has been hunted and managed by the Burger family since 1997. Today it operates as both a working game-breeding farm and a hunting lodge with exclusive-use camps for serious hunters and their families.

A working outfitter, not a booking agent

You'll deal directly with the owner. Chris Burger — PHASA Executive Committee member, founding member of the Matlabas Custodians — personally hosts every safari. Hunting in the field is led by our dedicated licensed Professional Hunters; the planning, the welcome, and the fireside debrief stay with the family.

Getting here

  • By road — roughly 4 hours from O.R. Tambo International (JNB), 2.5 hours from Polokwane.
  • By air — JNB or Polokwane; we arrange transfers.
  • Private airstrip — on the reserve, for charter arrivals.
  • Malaria-free year-round.

The hunting

Cape buffalo from our own herds, a strong sable and roan breeding programme, kudu, gemsbok, impala, wildebeest, zebra and over forty huntable species across the reserve. Leopard is available on special permit in season. See: Cape Buffalo · Plains Game · Sable & Roan.

The camps

Exclusive-use lodges and tented camps, each booked sole-occupancy for your party. Two of our lodges — Gifbospan and Elfrida — have never been connected to the grid. The remainder run on a mix of borehole water and renewable power. See all camps on the Accommodation page.

Best time to visit

Peak hunting season is the cooler, drier winter (April to September): the bush thins, game moves to water, and conditions for spotting and stalking are at their best. We welcome guests year-round — tell us your dates and we'll advise.
