We breed our own Cape buffalo on 24,700 malaria-free acres near Steenbokpan, so culling is genuine herd management, not a bought-in animal dropped in for the week. Rifle & calibre

South African law requires a minimum .375 calibre for any Cape buffalo hunt, including cows and cull animals. The .375 H&H is the classic minimum, while .416 and .458 calibres give extra stopping power on follow-up shots in thick cover. Shot placement

On a broadside buffalo, the shot is the high-shoulder/heart-lung triangle — straight up the front leg, one-third of the way into the body — to break the shoulder and anchor the animal. On a frontal presentation, aim at the centre of the chest at the base of the neck. Be ready with a solid for the follow-up. Best time of year

The dry Limpopo winter — May through September — is the prime window for Cape buffalo cow hunts. The grass drops, the bush opens and buffalo concentrate on water, making tracking and glassing far easier. Mid-winter mornings (June–August) usually offer the crispest conditions.
