Limpopo · South Africa

Where the Bushveld remembers you.

Family-run since 1997. The Marula Game Lodges stretch across 24 700 acres with Matlabas River views in the Limpopo Valley — malaria-free. Ethical hunting, slow eco-tourism, and off-grid stays under the southern sky.

Our story · Est. 1997 · Three generations

Three decades in the Bushveld.

The Burger family established Marula Game in 1997 in the Limpopo Valley, twenty kilometres south of the Botswana border. Three generations on, owner and outfitter Chris Burger still personally hosts every safari — across 24,700 acres and the Marula Game Lodges. You arrive as a guest. You leave as family.

Before you arrive

The questions guests ask us most.

Honest answers to the practical — and the difficult — questions, so you know exactly what to expect when you arrive on the Matlabas.

Yes. The entire 10,000-hectare reserve sits in a certified malaria-free zone of the Limpopo Valley — no prophylactics required, and safe for young children and pregnant guests.

It's roughly a 3.5-hour drive (about 350 km) from OR Tambo International via Thabazimbi to Steenbokpan. We share detailed directions and a live pin on confirmation. Private transfers and charter flights to the nearby airstrip can be arranged on request.

Lodge accommodation, three meals a day, soft drinks, tea and coffee, daily game drives or bush walks with your guide, and laundry. Premium spirits, wine pairings, trophy fees (for hunting guests) and transfers are quoted separately.

Every safari is personally hosted by owner and outfitter Chris Burger, who oversees the entire operation. In line with South African law the actual hunting in the field is guided by our dedicated PHASA-registered professional hunters. We practise fair-chase, walk-and-stalk hunting on free-roaming game, with strict annual quotas set to keep each herd healthy. We do not offer canned or put-and-take hunts.

Absolutely — many of our guests are mixed parties. Non-hunters and children enjoy game drives, bush walks, birding, swimming and quiet days at the lodge while others are in the field. The reserve is malaria-free and child-friendly.

Cape buffalo are the icons of the reserve, alongside leopard, kudu, Sable, Roan, eland, giraffe, zebra, warthog, and more than 260 bird species. Sightings are wild and unscripted — your guide tracks the bush each morning.

Yes. South Africa allows temporary firearm import with an SAPS 520 permit issued on arrival at OR Tambo. We send a step-by-step rifle-import pack with your booking confirmation and can arrange a meet-and-assist agent at the airport. Rifles are also available to hire at the lodge.

Trophies are dipped, packed and documented by an accredited taxidermist of your choice — we work most often with established partners in Limpopo. From there they ship to your country via a registered freight agent. Dip-and-pack, taxidermy and export costs are quoted separately and paid directly to those partners.

Neutral, layered clothing (mornings are cold in winter, days are warm), closed walking shoes, a wide-brim hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a refillable water bottle. We'll send a full packing list with your confirmation.

May to September is dry, cool and excellent for game viewing and hunting — animals concentrate around water. October to April is green-season: lush Bushveld, newborn game, dramatic afternoon storms and exceptional birding. Both have their own magic.

Mobile signal across most of the reserve is reliable for calls and messaging. Wi-Fi is available at the main lodge areas — fast enough for email and a video call, but we'd quietly encourage you to put the phone down for a few days.

All rates are quoted in US dollars. Deposits and balances can be paid by international bank transfer or card; on-site extras (drinks, gratuities, curio purchases) are typically settled in cash or by card. Trophy fees and daily rates are usually settled by transfer before departure.

Tipping is appreciated but never expected. As a guide: professional hunter $150–$250 per day; tracker and skinner $50–$100 per day; camp and lodge staff at your discretion (we provide a discreet collective tip box). Tip what feels right for the service you received.

Yes — comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation, trip cancellation and lost luggage is strongly recommended for every guest. For hunters, please ensure firearms and trophies are covered separately.

Choose your lodge on the Stay page and submit an enquiry, or email Chris directly at chris@marulagame.co.za / +27 83 233 5628. We hold dates provisionally for 7 days while you finalise travel.

A 50% deposit secures your booking. Cancellations more than 60 days before arrival are refunded in full less a small admin fee; inside 60 days the deposit is retained and we'll do our best to rebook the dates with you.
