Free-range plains game · from $550
Warthog is one of Africa's most characterful animals — a tusked, bristle-maned little tank that trots the veld with its tail straight up and dives backwards into an aardvark hole when spooked. Affordable, fun and endlessly entertaining to hunt, a heavy old boar is a must on any first African safari. At Marula Game we hunt free-range warthog on 24,700 malaria-free acres of Limpopo Bushveld, fair chase on foot with a licensed PHASA Professional Hunter. Trophy fees start at USD $550.

No animal makes a hunting camp laugh like warthog. They arrive at water in single file at a fast trot, tails high, skid to a halt, then explode in all directions the moment the wind swings. A mature boar carries heavy, curved tusks that make a striking European mount or a full shoulder mount, and the meat is excellent on the coals. Take one early in the safari and you're properly warmed up for kudu, sable and buffalo.
Warthog hunting at Marula is spot-and-stalk in the cool of morning and late afternoon — glassing feeding boars on open flats and around pans, or catching them coming into water. Shots typically run 60 to 150 metres from sticks. A .243 or .270 with a good soft-point is plenty of rifle; most first-safari clients take their warthog with the same setup they'll use later for kudu and impala. Aim tight behind the shoulder — a boar hit well drops on the spot.
The warthog hunt price at Marula starts at USD $550 trophy fee for a representative boar, with exceptional heavy-tusked trophies priced on application. Trophy fees are payable only on animals taken (or wounded). Daily rates are two-tier and all-inclusive — plains-game hunts USD $400–$500 per hunter per day (Tents on Antwerp $400, Leadwood/Haakdoring $450, Marula Lodge $500). Warthog is the natural add-on to a wider plains-game safari alongside kudu, impala, gemsbok and zebra.

Absolutely. Warthog are abundant, characterful and affordable — a great confidence-builder on day one of a safari before you move onto bigger plains game. Good boars carry heavy curved tusks that make a striking European or full-mount trophy.
The South African hunting season runs April to September. Warthog hunt well throughout — they're active most of the year — but the dry winter months (May–August) concentrate them on water and around feeding sites for easier stalks.
Yes. Warthog is not CITES-listed, so import into the United States is straightforward — no CITES permit required, only the standard USFWS 3-177 declaration and a South African export permit. Your dip-and-pack facility handles the paperwork on your behalf.
