Plains Game vs Dangerous Game: What's the Difference?

If you are planning a first African hunt, two terms come up again and again: plains game and dangerous game. They describe two very different kinds of safari — different animals, different rifles, different costs, and a different feeling in the field. Understanding the split is the first step to booking the right trip. Here is the plain-English version.

The simple definition

Plains game means the antelope and other non-threatening species of the African bushveld — kudu, gemsbok, impala, wildebeest, zebra, warthog and many more. Dangerous game traditionally refers to the animals that can hurt or kill you. At Marula, our dangerous-game offering centres on Cape buffalo, with our managed herd of around 500 head.

The species, side by side

Plains game at Marula

Kudu, gemsbok, impala, blue wildebeest, eland, waterbuck, nyala, zebra and warthog — plus premium plains species like sable and roan on quota. These are spot-and-stalk or hide hunts, and most hunters take several species on a single trip.

Dangerous game at Marula

Cape buffalo — the "black death," and for many the ultimate African hunt. Buffalo are pursued on foot, tracking herds through thick country, and a wounded bull will come back for you. This is the hunt that demands the most of your nerve, your fitness and your rifle.

How they differ in practice

Risk and pace

Plains game is challenging but not dangerous — the difficulty is getting close to wary, sharp-eyed antelope. Dangerous game adds genuine physical risk and a slower, more deliberate hunt, often hours of tracking for one decisive moment at close range.

Cost

Plains-game safaris are far more affordable and are how most hunters experience Africa for the first time. Dangerous game — buffalo especially — carries a higher daily rate and a much higher trophy fee, reflecting the value of the animal and the way it is hunted (one hunter to one professional hunter).

Rifles

Plains game is comfortably hunted with common calibres in the .270 to .300 magnum range. Dangerous game is different: South African law and sound ethics require a minimum of .375 calibre on Cape buffalo. You are hunting an animal that can absorb punishment and fight back, so the rifle has to match.

Hunting style

Plains game blends spot-and-stalk with hide hunting over water and is very bow-friendly. Dangerous game is tracking and stalking on foot, reading sign and wind, closing the distance until the shot is certain.

Which one is right for you?

  • First trip to Africa, sensible budget, several trophies — start with plains game. It is the classic introduction and you will likely return.
  • Experienced hunter chasing a milestone, prepared for the cost and the walking — Cape buffalo is the dangerous-game hunt to build a trip around.
  • Want both — combine them. Most buffalo hunters at Marula add several days of plains game, which spreads the cost of your flights across more animals and more days in the field.

Why Marula can offer both well

Family-run since 1997 across roughly 24,700 malaria-free acres in the Limpopo Valley, Marula has the land and the species depth to run a serious buffalo hunt and a varied plains-game safari from the same camp. Owner and outfitter Chris Burger, who serves on the PHASA Executive Committee, personally hosts every safari.

Plains game vs dangerous game — FAQs

Can a beginner hunt dangerous game?

Buffalo is best suited to hunters with some experience and good fitness, but a fit first-timer can succeed with the right professional hunter guiding the stalk. Many start with plains game first.

Do I need a different rifle for each?

Plains game is fine with a .270–.300 magnum; Cape buffalo requires a minimum of .375 calibre by South African law.

Can I hunt both on one trip?

Yes, and most buffalo hunters do — adding plains game makes better use of your travel and time in the field.
